Welcome
Cornwall or in Cornish Kernow is a county located in south west England, which is west of the river Tamar. Located 28 miles west of Cornwall are a unique group of islands called The Isles Of Scilly. The influence of the Gulf stream gives Cornwall mild winter temperatures, rarely seeing any frost or snow.
Being exposed to the full force of the Atlantic ocean's swell Cornwall has many classic surf breaks. Not only are there numerous beach breaks, Cornwall has some famous reef spots , like Porthleven and The famous Cribbar wave (which works when the swell gets 20 foot or bigger).
Surfing has unfortunatly become a victim of its own success as many surf spots are becoming extremely overcrowded, which reflects what's happening all around the populated world.
The one sport that reflects Cornwall's pride and unity is rugby. The ihabitants of London certainly experienced this in 1991, when 54,000 supporters traveled to Twickenham to witness Cornwall's victory over Yorshire in the county final.
To be 16-3 down at 54 minutes and after extra time win 29-20, made this the one of the most memoriable games in Cornish history.
The interior of Cornwall's land mass consists of a series of magma intrusions, which in time solidfied to form granite. The surround sedimentary rock through a process of metamophism and mineralization formed metal ores such as: tin, copper, lead, zinc and silver. Tin has thought to have been mined from as early as the Bronze age and has still played an important role in Cornwall's economy up to the 1990's. With the depletion of opencast mining sources and the increase of metal prices mining may still be viable in the near future.
Another big resource in Cornwall is china clay, these deposits were formed from the decomposition of the granite. The excavation of this clay has left behind large clay pits, some of which are now lakes, but the most inovitive and impressive use for one of these quarries is The eden project. The Eden project is located at St Austell, has two gigantic Biomes which house 1,000,000 plants representing 5,000 species from many of the climatic zones of the world.
The Cornish peninsula has many fishing ports, Newlyn being the most famous. This has played an important role in the livelyhood of many Cornish families. It has always been a tough way of making a living, but it is more so now thanks to depleting fish stocks a strict quota's.
